Containerized exports from the U.S. to 10 major countries and territories in Asia (based on volumes at ports of destination) remained nearly unchanged in 2019, going down a minute 0.7% from the previous year to 5,958,060 TEUs, according to U.S. research company Descartes Datamyne.

By origin, exports to China suffered a double-digit contraction of 15.8% to total 1,748,420 TEUs. Containerized exports to Japan and South Korea improved 1.6% to 744,654 TEUs and 8.8% to 715,050 TEUs, respectively, but those to Taiwan and Hong Kong lost ground, by 4% to 610,981 TEUs and by 20.6% to 162,637 TEUs, respectively.

Containers to India and Vietnam both increased notably, with the former surging 14.3% to 561,971 TEUs and the latter, 16% to 499,143 TEUs. Volumes to Malaysia accomplished a dramatic expansion of 43.7% to amount to 290,576 TEUs. Those to Thailand also soared 16.8% to 245,144 TEUs.
