In the last quarter (Oct – Dec) of 2019, cargo traffic at Spanish ports fell 5.1% to 136.4 million tons compared to 143.7 million tons in the same period in 2018. The reduction is was driven by both the decline in containerized shipments, which amounted to 47.2 million tons, down 1.8% or 4.2 million TEUs, down 3.1% year on year.
In 2019, total port traffic reached 564.6 million tons, with a slight increase of 0.2% on the previous year. Container throughput rose 3.6% from a year earlier to 195.3 million tons, up 3.6% or 17.42 million TEUs, up 2.2% from the previous year.
