The Port of Tokyo handled a total of some 300,000 TEUs of loaded containers in October 2019, which went down 6% from a year earlier, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)'s Bureau of Port and Harbor. Oceangoing containers accounted for 276,922 TEUs, down 6.4%, while domestic containers totaled 23,260 TEUs, down 1.6%. Looking more closely at oceangoing containers, 77,898 TEUs were exported, down 7.3%, and 199,024 TEUs were imported, down 6.1%. The total volume of empty containers moved to and from Tokyo amounted to 91,129 TEUs, down 7.8%. Shipments carried to and from Tokyo by sea weighed 7.2 million tons in total, down 10.5%. International shipments accounted for 3.99 million tons, down 8.2%, while the remaining 3.21 million tons were domestic shipments, down 13.2%.

In the first 10 months (January-October), Tokyo processed 2,973,816 TEUs of full containers in total, down 2.8%. More specifically, 2,744,308 TEUs were transported to and from other countries and regions, down 2.8%, while the balance of 229,508 TEUs were hauled to and from domestic ports, down 1.8%. Exports decreased 4.8% to 767,431 TEUs, and imports fell 2.1% to 1,976,877 TEUs. The total volume of marine cargo processed at the port in the 10 months in question was 73.13 million tons, down 3.6%. International cargo accounted for 40.23 million tons, down 2.5%, and domestic cargo, 32.9 million tons, down 4.9%.
