A bill to promote the exports from Japan of agricultural, forestry and fishery products was passed and enacted at a plenary session of the House of Councilors on Nov. 20. It suggested that a dedicated organization be set up to formulate policies and complete necessary domestic formalities. The government of Japan intends to have it in force in April 2020.

To exports agricultural products from Japan now, it is necessary to apply for the issuance of certificates to assure they meet required health criteria. To do so, however, procedures must be followed at several governmental ministries and agencies. It is pointed out, as such, that it hinders such exports from growing.

In accordance with the new law, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will establish a new in-house organization that will be solely responsible for policy formulation and domestic formalities. By setting up a dedicated commanding body within itself, Tokyo will make efforts to further increase agricultural, forestry and fishery product exports.
