Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 1.215 billion tons of shipments in the first nine months of 2019 (January-September), up 0.7% year on year from 1.206 billion tons, the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Containerized shipments amounted to 21.709 million TEUs, up 1.1% from 21.462 million TEUs.
Looking at container throughput at major ports, Busan was responsible for 16.32 million TEUs, up 1.4%. Exports and imports accounted for 7.729 million TEUs in total, up 1.1%, thanks to growth in imports from Japan and exports to China, although those to and from Canada, Australia, Iran and other partners declined. Transshipment (T/S) containers totaled 8.591 million TEUs, up 1.6%.
To and from Gwangyang, 1.801 million TEUs were moved, up 2.1%. Exports and imports decreased 1.3% to a total of 1,344 million TEUs, but T/S containers surged 13.5% to 457,000 TEUs.
Containers to and from Incheon only hiked a minute 0.4% to 2.285 million TEUs.
