A total of 18,904,934 TEUs of containers were handled in 2018 at the 64 domestic ports in Japan to and from which international oceangoing containerized shipments are imported and exported, up 2.8% from the previous year, according to statistics complied by the Harbour Modernization Promotion Committee. Combined throughput at 5 major ports (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) stood at 14,308,753 TEUs, up 2.4%, accounting for 75.7% of the total.

Exports of loaded containers to the 64 ports amounted to 6,088,501 TEUs, up 2.1%, including 4,671,978 TEUs moved to and from the Big Five, up 1.6%. As for imports, 7,783,396 TEUs were moved to the 64, of which 6,762,245 TEUs were handled at the five major ports, up 2.1%.
