Commercial ports in China handled 22.40 million TEUs of containers in total in May, up 4.3% from the same month last year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). In the first five months, box throughput in 5.2% from a year earlier to 104.67 million TEUs.
In breakdown, coastal ports were responsible for 92.87 million TEUs, up 4.4%, while the remaining 11.80 million TEUs were moved to and from inland river ports, up 12.8%.
Shanghai port processed 3.76 million TEUs in May, up 3.9% from the same month in 2018. For the five months of the year, the world’s busiest container port handled 17.78 million TEUs, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.2%.
