Containerized shipments handled at India’s 12 state-run ports in fiscal 2018 (April 2018-March 2019) amounted to 9.876 million TEUs, swelling 8.08% from 9,138 million TEUs registered in the previous year and coming very close to the 10-million-TEU line, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Looking at containers to and from major ports, throughput grew 6.1% from 4.833 million TEUs to 5.133 million TEUs at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, exceeding the five-million-TEU line for the first time and making it the leading port. Chennai processed 1.62 million TEUs, which increased 6.4% from 1.549 million TEUs and helped the port come in second place. The third busiest port was Kolkata, to and from which 830,000 TEUs were moved, hiking 4.3% from 796,000 TEUs.
