Japan exported 562,821 tons of containerized shipments to China in January, down 24.5%, suffering the first year-on-year contraction in five months, according to a report compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). In terms of value, they amounted to \462.2 billion, down 24.1%, posting a decrease from a year earlier for two back-to-back months.

Japan's imports from China, in contrast, swelled 8% to 2,123,356 tons, enjoying the first year-on-year improvement in two months. On a value scale, they increased 8.1% to \1.272 trillion, posting growth from a year earlier for the 10th month in a row.
