Sea and rail containers moved to and from major ports in China surged 29.4% year on year to a total of 4.501 million TEUs in 2018, thanks to advancements in China-Europe rail services under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Coastal ports were responsible for 4.301 million TEUs, up 30.5%, accomplishing a growth of 80% just over the period of three years from 2016.

China Railway Express is operated to and from coastal and inland river ports, such as Qingdao, Yingkou, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Tianjin, Dalian, Lianyungang, Tangshan, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Xiamen, as well as many other cities.

Sea and rail container lifting at major ports in 2018 are as follows: 1,153,714 TEUs at Qingdao, up 48.6%, which enjoyed the largest share of the pie. Qingdao was followed by Yingkou, which processed 762,662 TEUs, up 5.6%, coming in second place. Ranked third was Ningbo-Shenzhen, to and from whih 601,676 TEUs were carried, up 50.2%. Containers to and from Tianjin surged 41.3% to 492,375 TEUs, finishing in fourth. The fifth leading port was Dalian, but container throughput decreases from a year earlier, going down 4.6% to 393,400 TEUs.
