The total volume of containerized shipments handed at the Port of Yokohama in 2018 grew 0.2% from a year earlier to 113.76 million tons. Oceangoing cargo accounted for 78.282 million tons, up 5.6%, registering a year-on-year improvement for two consecutive years.

Containers to and from Yokohama totaled 43.07 million tons, up 4.1%. International shipments amounted to 40.28 million tons, up 4.5%, consisting of 17.124 million tons of exports, up 6.2%, and 23.158 million tons of imports, up 3.2%. Meanwhile, domestic cargo weighed 2.789 million tons, down 0.3%.

In terms of number, container throughput at Yokohama rose 3.7% to 3.036 million TEUs, increasing year on year for the second year in a row and exceeding the 3-million-TEU line for the first time in six years, or since 2012. International shipment picked up 3.9% to 2.72 million TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year expansion for three years running, of which outbound containers accounted for 1.45 million TEUs, up 3.7%, and inbound containers, 1.27 million TEUs, up 4.1%. Those transshipped at Yokohama surged 14.8% to 130,000 TEUs, growing year on year for three straight years.
