South Korea's trade ports handled a total of 28.875 million TEUs of containers in 2018, growing 5.1% year on year from 27.468 million TEUs, according to statistics compile by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). In breakdown, exports and imports increased 1.7% to 16.595 million TEUs in total, thanks to rises in container movement to and from Southeast Asia. Transshipment (T/S) containers were even more brisk, surging 12.1% to 12.009 million TEUs.

By port, Busan processed 21.592 million TEUs, up 5.4% from 20.493 million TEUs. Exports and imports accounted for 10.214 million TEUs, up 0.3%, while T/S containers soared 11.3% to 11.378 million TEUs.

Kwangyang handled 2.401 million TEUs, up 7.5% from 2.233 million TEUs in 2017. Exports and imports rose 3.7% to 1.818 million TEUs. T/S containers were more robust, jumping 32% to 583,000 TEUs.

Containers to and from Incheon amounted to 3.105 million TEUs, hiking 1.9% from 3.048 million TEUs, owing to growth in shipments to and from Southeast Asia.
