Containers moved eastbound to the U.S. from 18 countries and regions in Asia increased 21.8% from a year earlier to 1,645,022 TEUs in December of last year, posting a year-on-year improvement for eight months in a row, according to statistics unveiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). On a full year scale, they grew 7.8% to 17,830,178 TEUs in 2018. New records were set for both December and 2018. The August result was revised upward to 1,579,000 TEUs, while a major upward adjustment was made of the October throughput from 1,609,000 TEUs to 1,735,000 TEUs.

Looking at 2018 yearly container movement by origin, the JMC statistics, compiled with data provided by JOC Group’s Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS), indicated that 11,627,808 TEUs were exported from China, up 8.4%; 845,795 TEUs from South Korea, up 6.8%; 664,721 TEUs from Japan, up 2.8% and 654,915 TEUs from Taiwan, up 4.1%.

From ASEAN members, a total of 2,738,990 TEUs were moved, up 6.9%. Vietnam exported 1,182,346 TEUs, up 9.6%, enjoying a year-on-year expansion for nine consecutive years. Thai shipped 564,299 TEUs, up 4.2%, and Indonesia, 386,887 TEUs, up 4.7%, both of which were new yearly records.

Containers from South Asia were brisk as well, surging 12.7% to 997,888 TEUs. Those from India ballooned 15% to 744,113 TEUs, growing year on year for nine years running.
