It is estimated by the Busan Port Authority (BPA) that container throughput at the Port of Busan grew 5.8% year on year to 21.67 million TEUs, clearing it goal of handling 21.5 million TEUs and establishing a new yearly record. Owing to sluggishness in the domestic economy, exports and imports totaled 10.22 million TEUs, remaining nearly unchanged from the previous year. In contrast, transshipment (T/S) containers surged 11.5% to 11.46 million TEUs, the highest volume since the port became operational. South Korean and other shipping companies were responsible for 35% and 65% of the total container lifting, which also remain nearly unchanged.

The BPA has set a target of processing 22.5 million TEUs of containers in 2019, up 3.8% from 2018, including 12 million TEUs of T/S containers.
