Outbound containers from Asia to Europe increased 5.5% from a year earlier to 1,272,954 TEUs in October, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Thanks to steadiness in the European economy, they posted a year-on-year improvement for three months in a row. In January-October, they grew 2.1% to 13,440,251 TEUs, setting a new record for the 10 months in question.

Meanwhile, inbound containers from Europe to Asia swelled 5.8% to 698,576 TEUs in October, enjoying a year-on-year increase for three months running. In the first 10 months, they decreased 2.4% to 6,361,091 TEUs, but in terms of volume, they were still brisk, coming close to the all-time high they marked a year.

Looking at containers exported from Asia in October by origin, the JMC unveiled from statistical data provided by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K. that those from China climbed 3.5% to 903,914 TEUs, achieving year-on-year growth for the third straight month. Shipments from South Korea went up 10.6% to 79,960 TEUs and from Taiwan, up 3.6% to 29,463 TEUs. Those from Japan were robust, surging 19.9% to 40,373 TEUs and marked an increase from a year earlier for seven consecutive months. Containers from the ASEAN nations hiked 0.5% to 199,608 TEUs in total. Those from Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore all declined, down 1.2% to 58,145 TEUs, down 3.4% 6o 34,750 TEUs and 20.9% to 10,058 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, exports from Thailand rose 5% to 43,979 TEUs, and those from Malaysia improved 4.7% to 32,770 TEUs.

As for imports from Europe, meanwhile, those from the U.K. soared 12.7% to 51,495 TEUs, inflating year on year for two back-to-back months. Container from other economies in the region enlarged almost across the board, with those from the Netherlands going up 9.3% to 64,244 TEUs and from Italy, up 8.1% to 55,977 TEUs. On the other hand, exports from Germany and France both decreased minutely, down 0.5% to 114,475 TEUs and down 0.2% to 38,960 TEUs, respectively.
