A total of 1,406,591 TEUs of containers were traded between Asia and Europe in September, which grew 6.6% from a year earlier and marked a year-on-year improvement for two back-to-back months, according to a report released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In January-September, containers amounted to 12,163,169 TEUs on the route, increasing 1.7% and setting a new record for the nine months in question.

Looking at exports from Asia by origin, those from China swelled 8.2% to 1,017,011 TEUs in September, accomplishing the first year-on-year expansion in five months. Containers from Japan hiked 4.2% to 36,280 TEUs, posting an increase from a year earlier for six months running. In contrast, those from South Korea and Taiwan were both sluggish, falling 5.9% to 90,324 TEUs and 3.1% to 32,552 TEUs, respectively.

The JMC report, which had been compiled from data provided by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., added that imports from Europe to Asia, meanwhile, came back in September from the plunged they suffered in August, rising 3.4% year on year to 619,035 TEUs. In January-September, however, they fell 3.4% to 5,655,925 TEUs but were still the second largest throughput for the nine-month term, following the record they set in September 2017.

By destination, imports to Taiwan climbed 8.7% to 20,624 TEUs, achieving a year-on-year increase for eight months in a row, and those to South Korea rose 1.7% to 46,483 TEUs, posting the first improvement from a year earlier in six months. On the other hand, containers to China went down 1.9% to 314,633 TEUs and to Japan, down 2.6% to 47,992 TEUs, which shrank year on year for nine and three consecutive months, respectively.
