Total volume of containerized shipments (international, domestic and international feeder containers) transported to and from the Japanese ports that handled international oceangoing containers in 2017 was an all-time high of 22.79 million TEUs, increasing 5% from the previous year and breaking the previous record of 21.72 million TEUs set in 2014, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), which has compiled data (preliminary figures) from port and harbor administrators across Japan. In breakdown, international and domestic containers remained robust from 2016, growing 4.7% to 18.39 million TEUs and 6.3% to 4.4 million TEUs, respectively, while international feeder containers were also brisk.

By port, Tokyo was responsible for 5.049 million TEUs, up 6.6%. Ranked second was Yokohama, which processed 2.927 million TEUs, up 5.3%. Looking at the others in the top five, Kobe handled 2.924 million TEUs, up 4.4%; Nagoya, 2.784 million TEUs, up 4.7% and Osaka, 2.327 million TEUs, up 5%. As for others, 992,000 TEUs were carried to and from Hakata, up 2.6%; 570,000 TEUs to/from Naha, up 5.4%; 546,000 TEUs to/from Kitakyushu, up 5.6%, 541,500 TEUs to/from Shimizu, up 47% and 335,000 TEUs to/from Tomakomai, up 5.8%. Container throughput exceeded the 200,000-TEU mark at the following ports as well: Sendai Shiogama, which handled 260,000 TEUs; Hiroshima, 256,000 TEUs; Yokkaichi, 241,000 TEUs and Niigata, 227,000 TEUs.
