The combined volume of local and feeder containers traded between South Korea and China remained nearly unchanged from a year earlier in the first half (January-June), growing a minute 0.96% to 1,437,124 TEUs, according to the Yellow Sea Liner Shipping Council (YSLSC). Local shipments increased 0.82% to 1,353,460 TEUs, while feeder containers were more brisk, rising 3.27% to 83,664 TEUs. It is analyzed that underlying factors included the retaliatory actions that China had taken against South Korea for introducing the THHAD missile defense system, and enhancements in Beijing’s import bans on metal scrap, waste plastic, waste paper and other commodities.

Containers from South Korea to China hiked 1.94% to 554,066 TEUs, comprising 514,960 TEUs of local shipments, up 1.82%, and 39,106 TEUs of feeder cargoes, up 1.94%. Meanwhile, South Korea imported 883,058 TEUs from China, up 0.36%. Local containers accounted for 838,500 TEUs, up 0.22%, while the remaining 45,558 TEUs were feeder containers, up 3.03%.
