China's Ministry of Transport (MOT) unveiled on July 17 that containers moved to and from the nation in the first half (January-June) increased 5.4% year on year to set a new record of 121.044 million TEUs. Throughput increased at both coastal and inland river ports, which went up 5.5% to 107.5 million TEUs and up 4.2% to 13.544 million TEUs.

As for coastal ports, container lifting at Shanghai exceeded the 20-million-TEU mark for the first time, amounting to 20.504 million TEUs, up 4.6%. Ranked second was Ningbo-Zhoushan, which handled 13.312 million TEUs, up 7.5%. The third busiest port was Shenzhen, which processed 12.126 million TEUs, up 2.3%. Shenzhen was followed by Guangzhou, to and from which 10.464 million TEUs were carried, up 8.6%. At the bottom of the top five was Qingdao, where throughput grew 3.2% to 9.381 million TEUs.

Looking more closely at inland river ports, meanwhile, Suzhou was the leading port, processing 3.072 million TEUs, up 7.3%. Finishing in second place, Foshan handled 1.909 million TEUs, down 0.7%. Containers to and from Nanjing swelled 1% to 1.572 million TEUs, the third largest volume. Coming in fourth, containers to and from Wuhan surged 12.9% to 732,700 TEUs. Jiangmen boasted the fifth largest volume, handling 403,700 TEUs, up 1.1%.
