The Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) recently unveiled its projection for the 20 busiest container ports in the world in 2018. It is anticipated that Chinese ports will account for a half of the top 20, seven of which will rank in the top 10. However, growth in throughput will become weaker than a year earlier. Increases at Asian ports will be higher than the top 20’s average, while most European ports will enjoy mild hikes in container lifting.

The CAS foresees the lineup of the top 10 will remain nearly unchanged. Ningbo-Zhoushan and Shenzhen will switch positions with each other, with the former finishing in third place, up from fourth, and the latter, in fourth place, down from third. Hong Kong will fall from fifth to seventh. On the other hand, Busan will climb from six to fifth, and Guangzhou, from seventh to sixth.

It is also envisaged that Xiamen will step up from 14th to 13th, posting a higher growth rate than in 2017, while Antwerp will move down from 14th to 13th. Container throughput will remain favorable at Long Beach, making the U.S. West Coast port rank in 20th place. Laem Chabang will go out of the top 20.
