As for container movement in the first quarter (January-March) on shortsea routes to and from South Korea, 481,725 TEUs were traded to and from Japan, growing a favorable 5.7% year on year from 455,806 TEUs. In contrast, containers to and from China declined 5% to 666,906 TEUs from 702,222 TEUs.

According to first-quarter statistics compiled by the Korea Nearseas Freight Conference (KNFC), container exports from South Korea improved 7.4% to 280,603 TEUs from 261,386 TEUs. Imports to the nation were also brisk, swelling 3.4% to 201,122 TEUs.

With exports and imports combined, local containers increased 2.6% to 182,611 TEUs, while transshipment (T/S) containers to and from other Asian countries and regions as well as those in other regions were more robust, surging 13.4% to 226,464 TEUs. On the other hand, feeder cargoes fell 7% to 72,650 TEUs.

The Yellow Sea Liner Shipping Conference (YSLSC) has compiled a similar report for the three months in question. It says the nation’s exports decreased 8% to 262,033 TEUs, and that its imports also registered negative growth, shrinking 3% to 404,873 TEUs. They are both reported to remain dull in May.
