A total of 1,288,710 TEUs of containers were exported from 18 countries and regions in Asia to the U.S. in April, which fell 1.6% from a year earlier and recorded a year-on-year decline for four months in a row, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In the first four months, 5,384,580 TEUs were moved eastbound on the same trade, which swelled 7.6%. In April, throughput was the second highest, following the record set in April 2017, and in January-April, it reached a new all-time high.

Looking at container movement in April by origin, the JMC said in a report it had compiled from statistical data provided by Journal of Commerce (JOC)’s Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS) that containers from China diminished 5.6% to 796,622 TEUs, which suffered the first year-on-year shrinkage in four months. In contrast, those from Vietnam climbed 4.3% to 86,853 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year increase for 25 months running. Those from South Korea went up 1.7% to 67,091 TEUs; from Japan, down 3.4% to 53,514 TEUs and from Taiwan, down 4.2% to 50,157 TEUs.
