Container exports from Japan to China plunged 16.5% from a year earlier to 964,470 tons in March, posting a year-on-year decrease for the seventh consecutive month, according to a report unveiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). The severe shrinkage was made due to Beijing’s new policy for controlling waste plastic imports. In terms of value, however, they soared 11.9% to \840.4 billion, achieving the first year-on-year improvement in two months.

The JMC report, which had been complied from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) added that inbound containers were more sluggish, plummeting 22.2% to 1,596,109 tons, incurring the first year-on-year contraction in two months. They fell 22.2% on a value scale as well, amounting to \906.9 billion yen, which was also the first year-on-year decline in two months.
