The World Container Index assessed by Drewry, a composite of container freight rate on 8 major routes to/from the US, Europe and Asia, is up by 4.0% to $1,218.54/FEU.

Two-year spot freight rate trend for the World Container Index: composite index is up by 4.0% this week and down by 20.0% from the same period of 2017.

The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is US$1,401/FEU, which is $63 lower than the five-year average of $1,464/FEU. Spot rates on the Transpacific route increased hugely this week on back of the 1 April GRIs. Rates from Shanghai to the USEC skyrocketed by US$335 for a 40ft box to $2,354, and freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles surged by $185 to $1,230/FEU. Meanwhile, rate on Shanghai-Rotterdam dropped to $1,201/FEU this week – change of $190. Drewry expects the rates to decline next week on the account of service changes and capacity addition.
