According to statistics compiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of London, a total of 14,177,360 TEUs of containers were traded worldwide in December 2017, which grew 5.5% from the corresponding month of 2016 and registered a year-on-year improvement for three months in a row. The global freight rate index (100 points in 2008) was 65 points, falling by one point from a month earlier and two from a year earlier. Container freight rates were as weak as they were in January to March 2016.

By major region, all enjoyed steady grow in both exports and imports. The Far East imported 5,652,116 TEUs, going up 4.2%, and exported 8,010,303 TEUs, up 5%. Shipments to Europe swelled 4% to 2,741,940 TEUs, while those from the region climbed 5.2% to 2,442,246 TEUs. North America’s imports improved 5.2% to 2,306,816 TEUs, and its exports hiked 2% to 1,313,978 TEUs.
