Japan exported 1,297,708 used vehicles (i.e., passenger cars, cargo freighters and buses) in 2017, which increased 9.3% from a year earlier and registered the first year-on-year improvement in three years, according to a report released by the International Auto Trade Association (iATA).

The iATA report, complied from trade statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), indicated that exports to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) held the lion’s share of the pie, totaling 144,323 units, but in terms of year-on-year growth, they declined 4.3%. Ranked second were those to New Zealand, which surged 10.8% to 135,509 units. Vehicles destined to Myanmar finished in third place, but in number, they plunged 19.2% to 100,322 units, as the Southeast Asian nation in mid-March imposed a ban on importing those with steering wheels on the right side.

As for exports to other economies, those to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Russia increased notably, but those to Georgia, Singapore and Fiji declined sharply.
