South Korea's trade ports processed a total of 27.421 million TEUs of containers in 2017, which increased 5.4% from the 26 million TEUs handled in the previous year, according to a preliminary report released by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Exports and imports grew 5.6% to 16.281 million TEUs in total, which went up 5.6%, while transshipment (T/S) containers improved 3.5% to 10.694 million TEUs.

By port, Busan was responsible for 20.473 million TEUs, up 5.2%. Oceangoing containers rose 5.8% to 10.178 million TEUs thanks to increases in freight movement to and from major trade partners. T/S shipments grew 3.8% to 10.213 million TEUs due to rises in throughput mainly by domestic carriers.

In contrast, containers to and from Kwangyang fell 1.3% from 2.25 million TEUs to 2.22 million TEUs. Exports/imports and T/S containers were both sluggish, going down 3.5% to 1.744 million TEUs and down 1.1% to 438,000 TEUs, respectively.

Inchon handled 3.041 million TEUs, which surged 13.5% as international cargo to and from the metropolitan area swell in volume, clearing its goal of processing 3 million TEUs of containers.
