Container volumes grew steadily in September in Singapore and Hong Kong, both of which are major hub ports in Asia.

The Port of Singapore handled a record-high 52.6 million tons of cargo last month, which increased 9.8% from a year earlier. Containerized shipments accounted for 28.8 million tons, which grew 5.4%. They ware favorable in terms of number as well, swelling 7.8% to 2.8 million TEUs.

In the nine months from January, Singapore processed 466 million tons in total, which hiked 5.7%. Containers climbed 5.6% to 259.6 million tons. On a TEU scale, they improved 7.6% to 24.8 million TEUs.

Meanwhile, container throughput increased for the first time in two months at the Port of Hong Kong in September, which rose 7.5% year on year to 1.84 million TEUs. The Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi container terminals were responsible for 1.43 million TEUs, which enjoyed a double-digit improvement of 12.4%. In contrast, container lifting decreased 6.5% to 410,000 TEUs in total at the River Trade, mid-stream and other terminals.

In the first nine months, Hong Kong handled a total of 15.635 million TEUs, which soared 9.1%. In breakdown, 12.22 million TEUs were moved to and from the Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi container terminals, which went up 10.1%, while the remaining 3.415 million TEUs were processed at the other terminals, up 5.9%.
