Japan exported 961,007 tons of containers to China in August, which increased 9.7% from a year earlier and enjoyed a year-on-year improvement for the third consecutive month, according to a report on container movement between the economies unveiled on Oct. 17 by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In terms of value, they surged 30.2% to \671.2 million, registering a year-on-year rise for nine months in a row.

The JMC report added that container imports from China to Japan amounted to 1,833,479 tons, which increased year on year for six straight months. They were valued at \1.101 trillion, which soared 9.9%.

As for freight rates (according to indices unveiled by Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd.), containers were moved outbound from Yokohama to Shanghai at a rate of US$380 per TEU, which fell 5% from the corresponding month of 2016. Meanwhile the rate for importing containers from Shanghai to Yokohama was $630 per TEU, which went up 3.3% and marking a year-on-year expansion for eight consecutive months.
