Bolstered by the robust cargo demand from Asia to Europe, major European ports have reported record cargo throughput records for the first six months of the year.

The port of Rotterdam handled a total of 238.0 million tons of goods in the first half of the year. The market share of Rotterdam by comparison with the other ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range increased from 29.0% in the first quarter of 2016) to 30.9% in the same period of 2017 in the container sector.

Container throughput developed very positively during the first six months, with an increase of 9.3% in TEU and 10.4% in tons. Total throughput was 6.7 million TEUs, with a combined weight of 69.6 million tons achieving all-time highs again.

The Port of Barcelona has reported new record figures in traffic in the first half of 2017. Its semiannual cargo volumes totaled 28.1 million tons. This record represents an increase of 18.5% from the same period last year. Containerized shipments surged 36.1% from a year earlier to 13.7 million tons, or 27.2% year on year to record 1.366 million TEUs in the first six months of 2017.

The Belgian port of Antwerp handled 111,385,518 tons of freight during the first six months of this year, 2.8% more than in the same period last year. Container freight once more performed well after a number of exceptional years, with an increase of 2.5% in terms of tonnage and 1.9% in TEU. 

The record volume of container freight rose by 2.5% during the first half of the year, to 61,288,264 tons. In terms of standard boxes it was up 1.9%, to 5,143,305 TEUs.
