Two gantry cranes are not working at the Port of Chittagong in Bangladesh, reducing cargo-handling efficiency for gearless containerships by half. Some container carriers are forced to wait for 10 days or even more to be berthed, indicating the port is suffering an escalating congestion.

On June 25, the X-Press Suez (800 TEUs), which is operated by Sea Consortium Pte. Ltd. of Singapore, caused an accident at the port, slamming into the gantry cranes, which are two of the four at Jetty No. 3 of the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT). However, shipments to and from the Pangaon Inland Container Terminal can be moved exclusively by geared containerships.

It is expected to take several months before the two gantry cranes will go back in normal service.
