The European Union (EU) placed Bangladesh on the list of high-risk nations for EU trade on June 1, 2017, demanding a new security screening check for explosives on its exports transported by sea and air to the EU. The screening can be performed either at the point of origin (Bangladesh) or at transit prior to the entry into the EU. The implementation will be the responsibility of the carriers/airlines.

The measure could be a severe blow to the country as well as its garment manufacturers as the EU accounts for more than 60 percent of its annual exports.

The country has been in short of explosive detection equipment, and additional investments for explosive detection devises are too costlier for carriers.

Its lack of security check devises might also cause delays in delivery process and lead to longer lead times. This could further aggravate the chronic port congestion at its gateway port of Chittagong.

Last year, the U.K., Germany and Australia banned direct import shipments from Bangladesh's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on the ground of its poor security system.
