Leading shipping companies moved a total of 992,429 TEUs of container in April among 13 countries and regions in Asia, which fell 6.8% from the corresponding month of the previous year and suffered a year-on-year contraction for the fourth consecutive month. Dry containers waned decreased 6.3% to 938,787 TEUs, while reefer containers were more sluggish, plummeting 14.3% to 53,643 TEUs.

On an accumulated scale, overall container throughput on the intra-Asia trade route decreased 10.1% from a year earlier to 3,857,221 TEUs in the first four months (January-April). Dry and reefer containers both declined, with the former going down 9.7% to 3,642,419 TEUs and the latter, down 16% to 214,802 TEUs.

In April, imports to and exports from Japan both decreased, going down 8.2% year on year to 164,000 TEUs and down 16.7% to 107,000 TEUs, respectively.

Looking at containerized shipments from China by specific origin, those from northern and central China both incurred double-digit downturns, which waned 31.3% to 17,000 TEUs and 17.5% to 28,000 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, those from Fujian Province and southern China both enjoyed double-digit improvements, soaring 17% to 10,000 TEUs and 10.6% to 30,000 TEUs, respectively. Imports from Hong Kong picked up 3% to 7,253 TEUs, and those from Hong Kong improved a notable 21.6% to 15,000 TEUs.

As for container cargo from Southeast Asia, imports from Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia all grew, rising 15.2% to 300 TEUs, 1.8% to 10,000 TEUs and 5% to 6,000 TEUs, respectively. On the other hand, those from the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar were all contracted, which sank 6.1% to 6,000 TEUs, 5.6% to 12,000 TEUs, 5.9% to 2,000 TEUs, 9.2% to 9,000 TEUs and 18.3% to 300 TEUs, respectively.

Meanwhile, Japan exported 14,000 TEUs to northern China in April, which plunged 23.9% from a year earlier; 10,000 TEUs to central China, which fell 22.9% and 10,000 TEUs to Fujian Province, which slid a more notable 33.5%. However, containers to southern China were the only one to mark an improvement among those to mainland China, swelling 7.3% to 9,000 TEUs. Exports to Hong Kong registered a double-digit shrink of 11% to total 10,000 TEUs, but those to Taiwan soared 11.4% to 17,000 TEUs.

In respect to exports to Southeast Asia, those to Vietnam climbed 1.2% to 10,000 TEUs. However, those to other economies in the region were very stagnant across the board. Containers to the Philippines diminished 14.5% to 3,000 TEUs; to Cambodia, 36.9% to 300 TEUs; to Thailand, 16% to 12,000 TEUs; to Malaysia, 37.7% to 6,000 TEUs; to Singapore, 19.2% to 2,000 TEUs; to Indonesia, 28% to 5,000 TEUs and to Myanmar, 90% to 200 TEUs.
