Total container throughput at trade ports in South Korea decreased 0.8% year on year to 2.098 million TEUs in total in September, according to an announcement made on Oct. 27 by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. In detail, exports and imports increased 3% to 1.263 million TEUs in total, but transshipment (T/S) containers declined 6.3% to 818,000 TEUs due to the shutdown of several Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. services and other factors.

In the first nine months (January-September), in contrast, the total maintained to grow from a year earlier, improving 0.4% to 19.281 million TEUs.

Looking at containerized shipments to and from South Korea in September more precisely by port, Busan was responsible for 1.579 million TEUs, which waned 2% from the corresponding month of 2015. In breakdown, exports and imports went up 1% to a total of 787,000 TEUs, but T/S containers fell 4.7% to 792,000 TEUs.

Kwangyang handled 166,000 TEUs, which hiked 6.9%. Increasing 3.8%, 146,000 TEUs were moved to and from other countries and regions, while T/S containers plunged 46.8% to 20,000 TEUs.

Container lifting was favorable at Inchon as well, which inflated 9.4% to 222,000 TEUs. Exports went up 9% to 103,266 TEUs, and imports, up 10.5% to 116,370 TEUs. On the other hand, T/S cargo plummeted 10.4% to 1,296 TEUs.
