The Port of Los Angeles handled 747,707 TEUs in September, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to the previous year in despite of the Hanjin bankruptcy.

Loaded imports increased 4.3 percent to 388,958 TEUs compared to the previous September. Loaded exports increased 16.7% percent to 145,096 TEUs. Combined, total loaded volumes grew 7.4 percent to 534,054 TEUs.

With a decrease in empty containers of 8.3 percent to 213,652 TEUs, overall September volumes were 747,707 TEUs, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to September 2015.

In contrast, the other South Californian port of Long Beach was adversely affected by the collapse of Hanjin Shipping. Its overall containers totaled 546,805 TEUs, down by 16.6 percent from the same month last year.

This included 282,945 TEUs in imports, down 15 percent from September 2015, a month which capped off the port's best quarter ever. Exports dropped to 120,383 TEUs, a decrease of 4.2 percent. Empties were 27.2 percent lower at 143,476 TEUs.

Hanjin Shipping containers account for approximately 12.3 percent of the port's total containerized volume.
