The total throughput of containerized shipments moved by major shipping lines in June among 13 countries and regions in Asia was 1.174 million TEUs, which declined 3.2% from a year earlier and suffered a year-on-year contraction for three months in a row, or since April. Exports from Japan fell 6.6% to 139,500 TEUs, making a clear contrast to imports, which surged 25% to 192,000 TEUs.

In the first half (January-June), containers to and from China were brisk, but those to and from Japan and major economies in Southeast Asia had been on a down note. As a consequence, the total decreased 1.6% year on year to 6.845 million TEUs. Dry cargo accounted for 6.455 million TEUs, which went down 2%, and reefer cargo, the balance of 390,000 TEUs, up 7%. Japan exported 774,000 TEUs of containers, which plunged 12%, but incoming shipments rose 11.5% to 1.104 million TEUs.
