All trade ports in China processed 17,602,000 TEUs of containers in total in March, increasing 5.1% from the corresponding month of 2015, according to an announcement made by the nation’s Ministry of Transport. In breakdown, coastal ports were responsible for 15,837,200 TEUs, which rose 4.5%, while those to and from inland river ports were more brisk, surging 11.3% to 1,764,800 TEUs.

In the first three months (January-March), however, the total throughput increased a slight 1.9% year on year to 50,000,200 TEUs, which was much smaller than the improvement of 7.3% marked a year earlier. Looking at containerized shipments carried to and from China in the three months in question by port, four of the top 10 container ports suffered a year-on-year decrease in throughput. Containers to and from Shanghai waned 1.7% to 8,533,800 TEUs but managed to hold the largest share. Ranked second were those to and from Shenzhen, which diminished 2.6% to 5,569,200 TEUs. Shipments to and from Tianjin sank 2.1% to 3,284,700 TEUs, making the port finish in sixth place. Those to and from Dalian, which finished in seventh, were as weak, declining 1.9% to 2,131,400 TEUs. In contrast, containers to and from Guangzhou enjoyed the largest growth of 5.3% to amount to 3,986,000 TEUs. Container throughput at Ningbo-Zhoushan was as brisk, growing 5.3% to 5,385,400 TEUs.
