Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. (NRIC) recently unveiled projections for business and cargo transport in fiscal 2015 (April 2015-March 2016) and fiscal 2016. As for the transport of international cargo in fiscal 2016, NRIC projects that exports of oceangoing containers from Japan will turn positive, growing 0.9% from a year earlier to 4.856 million TEUs. The think tank expects the global economy will continue to recover slowly, despite the fact that the Chinese economy is anticipated to slow down. Meanwhile, imports are estimated to increase 1.6% to 6.901 million TEUs, marking the first year-on-year increase in three years, thanks to recoveries in consumer spending and capital investment. The total of exports and imports is foreseen to hike 1.3% to 11.763 million TEUs.

Looking at international airborne shipments, NRIC forecasts that exports will climb 1.6% year on year to 994,500 tons in fiscal 2016, underpinned by growth in auto parts and components. Semiconductors and other electronic parts and components, semiconductor fabrication devices, and general industrial and other machinery will all begin recovering during the second half, it added. The think tank anticipates that airfreight imports will swell 1% to 1.053 million tons. Durable goods, which have been sluggish, are expected to pick up in step with a recovery in personal spending, while perishable foodstuffs and garments are forecast to improve more vividly.
