India’s 12 state-run ports handled a total of 4.761 million TEUs of containers from April to October, which grew 1.9% from the corresponding seven months of 2014, according to an announcement recently made by the Indian Ports Authority (IPA). The year-on-year growth was slightly smaller than a month earlier. On a tonnage scale, the 12 ports processed 71.358 million tons in total, which improved 1.6%.

Looking at the TEU-based container throughput in detail by port, the Port of Nhava Sheva (also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port) was responsible for 2.609 million, which rose 0.3% from a year earlier. Growth was also registered for Chennai Port, to and from which 934,000 TEUs were moved, going up 1.3%; for the Port of Kolkata, 379,000 TEUs, up 3.3%; for V.O. Chidambaranar Port (formerly known as Turicorin Port), 357,000 TEUs, up 11.6% and for Cochin Port, 236,000 TEUs, up 8.8%. On the other hand, throughput remained weak at Visakhapatnam Port, which decreased 3.1% to 156,000 TEUs.
