Ports in in South Korea processed a total of 1.077 billion tons of shipments in the first nine months (January-September) of this year, registering a year-on-year increase of 2.2% from 1.054 billion tons, according to a report compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Containers totaled 19.16 million TEUs, growing 3.9%. In breakdown, exports and imports accounted for 10.96 million TEUs in total and transshipment (T/S) containers, the balance of 550,000 TEUs, which rose 1% and 7.4%, respectively.

Looking at container throughput by port, Busan was responsible for 14.596 million TEUs, going up 5%, which consisted of 7.026 million TEUs of exports and imports, up 2.2%, and 7.569 million TEUs of T/S containers, up a more favorable 7.7%.

On the other hand, container lifting at Kwangyang was not as brisk, which fell 2.6% to 1.72 million TEUs, owing to declines in exports to and imports from Europe, the Middle East and other regions. In contrast, Inchon did better, handling 1.74 million TEUs, an improvement of 0.5%, underpinned by increases in containers to and from Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian economies.
