Major shipping company moved a total of 1.208 million TEUs of containers among 13 countries and regions in Asia in August, which improved a favorable 4.4% from the corresponding month of last year. Exports from Japan decreased 2.3% to 135,000 TEUs, but imports rose 4.7% to 182,000 TEUs.

In the first eight months (January-August), 9.764 million TEUs were carried on the intra-Asia trade, which increased 2.9% from a year earlier. Containers from Japan waned 0.8% to 1.179 million TEUs, and those to Japan were as sluggish, falling a minute 0.2% to 1.481 million TEUs.

Looking at shipments exported from Japan in August by destination, those to China, Taiwan and Hong Kong all declined, going down 15.4% year on year to 46,000 TEUs, down 5.9% to 15,000 TEUs and down 2.1% to 12,000 TEUs, respectively. As for containers destined to Southeast Asia, those to Thailand and Indonesia both decreased mildly, with the former going down 0.9% to 16,000 TEUs and the latter, down 1.3% to 7,600 TEUs. On the other hand, exports to Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines all enjoyed double-digit growth, which surged 13.8% to 8,500 TEUs, 12.5% to 8,000 TEUs and 14.9% to 4,000 TEUs, respectively.
