Combined container throughput at ports in China decreased 0.2% year on year to 17.898 million TEUs in August, adversely impacted by the explosions that occurred at the Port of Tianjin, which suffered a decline of 20%, according to an announce made recently by the nation’s Ministry of Transport.

In the first eight months, containers totaled 138.758 million TEUs at the ports, rising 5.3%.

In August, coastal ports were responsible for processing 15.976 million TEUs, going down 1%, but in the January-August period, their performance was favorable, handling 124.264 million TEUs, which improved 4.8%.

Meanwhile, the remaining 1.923 million TEUs were transported to and from inland river ports in the month in question, which surged 10.8%. Throughput was as brisk in the eight months, enjoying a double-digit improvement of 10.1% to amount to 14.494 million TEUs.

At the Port of Tianjin, on the other hand, container lifting plunged 32% to 880,000 TEUs in August, due to the series of explosions that took place at a port facility on Aug. 12. As a consequence, Tianjin, which had been the sixth busiest container port in China until July, slipped down to seventh place and was outdone by Dalian.
