Combined container throughput at ports in China grew 6.1% year on year to 102.728 million TEUs in the first half (January-June), according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport. The total volume exceeded the 100-million-TEU line for the first time in and reached a new record high for a six-month term.
Coastal ports were responsible for 92.102 million TEUs, going up 5.6%, and inland river ports, 10.626 million TEUs, up 10.5%.
By port, the members of the top 10 ports remained unchanged from a year earlier. Shanghai defended its title of China’s busiest container port, processing 18.022 million TEUs, up 4.4%. Shanghai was followed by Shenzhen, which handled 11.576 million TEUs, up 5.4%. Ningbo-Zhoushan finished in third place, to and from which 10.496 million TEUs were moved, up 9.1%.
In terms of volume, throughput was down at Lianyungang, which ranked 10th, but up at the remaining nine ports.
