Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 2.112 million TEUs of containers in May, up 3.3% from the same month last year, according to statistics released by the nation's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

In breakdown, exports and imports accounted for 1.267 million TEUs, up slightly by 0.8%; transhipment (T/S) containers, 896,000 TEUs, up 6.5% and coastal cargo, 17,000 TEUs, up 28.6%.

By port, Busan was responsible for 1.641 million TEUs, which increased 3.7% from a year earlier. Export and import containers amounted to 806,000 TEUs, up 1.7%, and T/S containers, 836,000 TEUs, up 5.6%. Kwangyang Port saw a stable increase of 8.6% in container throughput for May to 220,000 TEUs while box traffic at Incheon fell 2.8% year on year to 201,000 TEUs.
