Outbound shipments from Japan to China increased year on year quantitatively in March, growing 4.1% to 1,109,466 tons, according to a report on cargo movement between the two Asian economies released recently by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). On a value scale, however, they plunged 23.5% to \678.7 billion. In the first quarter (January-March), exports from Japan to China remained nearly unchanged from a year earlier, falling a slight 1.8%. In terms of value, they fell 3%.

Meanwhile, imports from China to Japan plummeted 31.4% year on year to 1,407,413 tons in March, as this year’s Lunar New Year holidays fell on mid- to late-February. They were weak on a value basis as well, waning 21.9% to \919.4 billion. In the first three months, shipments from China to Japan diminished quantitatively, going down 8.6%, but improved in value terms, up 2.7%.
