The Port of Kawasaki handled a total of 85.66 million tons of seaborne inbound and outbound shipments in 2014, which decreased 4.4% from a year earlier and helped the port finish in ninth place among Japanese ports, according to the city of Kawasaki' Port and Harbor Bureau.

Oceangoing containers continued to enjoy a year-on-year improvement every year since 2010, surging 23.9% to 77,207 TEUs. Last year, in particular, the port registered a notable increase in container throughput, which was much greater than the previous years. In breakdown, international containers soared approximately 50% to 47,400 TEUs, although domestic containers fell 3.1% to 29,807 TEUs.

Containerized shipments to and from Kawasaki's public berths accounted for 42,908 TEUs, which swelled 57.5%. Exports rose 29.6% to 21,390 TEUs, while imports nearly doubled to 21,518 TEUs thanks to growth in furniture/fitments and other commodities.
