Germany-based inland container barge operator Contargo will implement a congestion surcharge of EUR18.50 per loaded or empty container carried to or from the Port of Rotterdam, effective April 15, 2015.

The surcharge aims to cover part of additional costs incurred from waiting times for barge traffic in the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp.

Contargo claimed that barges were experiencing 92-hour waiting times in Rotterdam and in Antwerp processing times were up to 72 hours.
