In 2014, major shipping companies moved a total of 14.43 million TEUs of containers among Japan and 12 other Asian economies, growing 1.9% year on year from 14.157 million TEUs. Accounting for 94.8% of all, dry containers increased 2% to 13.685 million TEUs, while reefer containers rose 1.6% to the balance of 745,000 TEUs. Shipments to and from Japan declined in both directions, with the former diminishing 1.5% to 2.227 million TEUs and the latter, 5% to 1.782 million TEUs.

Looking more closely at exports from Japan to the 12 other nations in the region by destination, those to Taiwan surged 19.3% from a year earlier to 235,000 TEUs. Containers to Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore were also brisk, improving 1.8% to 100,000 TEUs, 2.9% to 87,000 TEUs and 2.8% to 46,000 TEUs, respectively. On the other hand, exports to the other destinations were all sluggish. Those to China, the most aggressive buyer of Japanese products, suffered a double-digit decline, plunging 10% to 665,000 TEUs. Those to Thailand went down 5% to 192,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, down 4.1% to 159,000 TEUs and to Malaysia, down 4.2% to 89,000 TEUs. Containers to the Philippines also incurred a double-digit decrease, contracting 10.6% to 50,000 TEUs.
