India's 12 state-run ports handled a total of 5.984 million TEUs of containers in the nine months from April to December 2014, which grew 8.2% from a year earlier, according to an announcement made by the Indian Port Association (IPA). On a tonnage scale, the total amounted to 89.881 million tons, which improved 5.5%.

Container throughput rose 10.2% year on year to 3.346 million TEUs at Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Also known as Nhava Sheva, the nation's largest container port enjoyed a share of 55.9% of the pie. As for other ports, Chennai processed 1.181 million TEUs, up 6%; Kolkata, 477,000 TEUs, up 10.7%; V. O. Chidambaranar Port, formerly Tuticorin Port, 408,000 TEUs, up 10.6%; and Cochin, where DP World of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) operates the Vallarpadam Terminal, 280,000 TEUs, up 6%.
