In August, major shipping companies handled a total of 1.225 million TEUs of containers among Japan and 11 other economies in Asia, which improved 5.1% year on year from 1.165 million TEUs. Exports from Japan went down 2.5% to 153,000 TEUs, and imports to Japan were also weak, falling 3.7% to 181,000 TEUs.

In the first eight months (January-August), 9.702 million TEUs were carried on the intra-Asia trade, which rose 4.9% from 9.254 million TEUs. Containers from Japan went down 0.6% to 1.222 million TEUs, while those to Japan hiked 2.9% to 1.523 TEUs.
